Students who are just arriving in the United States often experience culture shock.
Culture shock is the feeling of disorientation experienced by someone who is suddenly subjected to an unfamiliar culture, way of life, or set of attitudes. This phenomenon can also occur for an international student who has lived in country but is attending college in a different region of the U.S.
A lack of cultural understanding is a real challenge as everything from clothing to art to sports to spoken dialect can be very particular to a region, state, city, and even campus. The level of culture shock experienced by the student corresponds to the degree of difference from the student’s culture of origin. International students also often experience homesickness to a greater degree than their peers as cultural differences compound geographic distance and many times these students lack any kind of established support system.
In addition, navigating policies/procedures/rules in this new context can be quite different than what a student is used to back home. Lastly, international students may also be first-year students, this cohort faces transition challenges not only due to culture change but also due to lack of experience in any kind of higher education setting.
